Something Magical.

Although this video is four years old, the message is timeless and still magical. Prompted by the anger she felt when a group of her students put on a skit making fun of a "spastic and retarded" child, a 3rd/4th-grade teacher takes action to change their attitudes. Unsatisfied with her initial effort, a visit to a school for children with cerebral palsy, the teacher welcomes the assistance of a musical therapist who helps the two groups produce a musical play together. Philadelphia's German Friends School students become partners with a group of students from the HMH School for Children with Cerebral Palsy. Together and separately, they prepare and practice for their joint production. The children in German Friends School learn about cerebral palsy from a medical doctor, participate in a simulation experience by visiting a public mall in wheelchairs and prepare their schoolmates for the performance by sharing what they have learned about cerebral palsy and their partners. Parents join in the learning experience and become part of the appreciative audience.

The presentation is ideal for helping teachers, parents and children better understand and value those with cerebral palsy. This video is a moving tribute to the courage and compassion of both groups of children, as well as a recognition of the effective moral guidance of their teachers.
