Som denies meat firm link, records say he was director.

AT THE receiving end of the beef controversy, Bharatiya Janata Party's Sardhana MLA Sangeet Som has accepted that even though he had bought land in Aligarh for a food processing unit, he had sold it to one Nasira Begum.

" I had bought land and sold it to some other people. But I was never involved in any such activity. I don't even eat egg, how can I export beef?" Som asked.

The regulatory filings made by the company named Al- Dua Food Processing Private Limited show that Som was a director, a post from which he resigned in 2008 after having served the board for three years since registration of the company.

The ruling Samajwadi Party leaders had alleged that Som, and Muslims on the issue of cow slaughter, was himself a beef exporter in past. Som had visited Bisahara village in Gautam Buddha Nagar, where a man was killed over rumours of eating beef on September 28.

After Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav invited the victim's family to Lucknow and announced a compensation of ` 45 lakh to them, Som said, " The state government had previously honoured the accused in Muzaffarnagar riots. Now it is protecting cow killers." Urban Development Minister Azam Khan was the first to allege that Som had share in a beef company. Later, SP leader Atul Pradhan also alleged that Som was a partner in a food processing company which produces and exports meat.
