Soccer boss tees off.

England football boss Steve McClaren joined the first golfers to tee off at a new nine-hole course.

The course was officially opened at Matfen Hall, Northumberland, with former Olympic athlete Jonathan Edwards also joining US Open hopeful, Ashington's Kenneth Ferrie for the first round.

Mr Ferrie, who is the touring professional at Matfen, said: "The course is very good an they have to be hugely proud of it."

Jointly designed by director of coaching at the hall John Harrison and director of golf Craig Parkinson, the new course has been built to complement the established 18 holes.

Mr Parkinson said: "We wanted to provide a layout that would test golfers of all abilities, from 36 handicap to a professional level."

Owner of the hall Sir Hugh Blackett also teed off yesterday.
