Soap star Rape role may be a millstone.
Emmerdale actor Jonathan Wrather has admitted that playing a soap rapist could be a millstone around his neck for his career.
Viewers have been watching evil and controlling Pierce Harris repeatedly attack wife Rhona.
And Jonathan says he is aware the role could affect the parts he gets in the future.
When asked if the role could be detrimental to his career, Jonathan, 48, said: "I was thinking about it earlier today actually.
"If you were in a major movie and it was seen globally, you might be allied to that kind of role, whatever it may be.
"Soap is on every day and you're in people's front rooms every day so you become notorious, so yes, I agree with you, it could become a millstone or it could be a boon."
But Jonathan says actors should be tackling tough issues.
He said: "I think you shouldn't really shy away from things like this.
"You're an actor, they're challenging things to take on, a challenging role and a challenging subject matter.
"If you're not prepared to do it, you should probably hand your Equity Card back, that's my point of view."
He added: "The response has been positive with regard to how it's been portrayed but also what a good thing it is to put out there."
Pierce returns this week and everyone finally finds out he raped Rhona.
