The Southern California city of Riverside has adopted a "Clean and Green Sustainable Action Plan" that includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy.

The result of meetings by the city's Clean and Green Task Force, established by Riverside's Mayor Ronald Loveridge in 2005, the plan states that sustainability is "a vital and necessary civic goal," and that city resources should be made available to explore key areas of interest.

Noting state and federal regulations and the City's General Plan for 2025, the Action Plan addresses seven categories encompassing all aspects of living in Riverside including: energy, greenhouse gas emissions, waste reduction, urban design, urban nature, transportation, and water.

Highlights of the Clean and Green Sustainable Riverside Action Plan include the adoption and implementation of a policy to increase the use of renewable energy to meet 33% of the city's electric load by 2020, as well as promotion of Riverside as a "Solar City" and implementation of programs for residential and commercial customers that will increase solar generation in the city to 1 megawatt by 2015 (enough for 1,000) homes and 3 MW by 2020.

Additionally, the plan would implement a climate action strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 7% of the 1990 city baseline by 2012; implement programs to encourage and increase participation of diverted waste from landfills by 2% before the end of 2008; and develop measures to encourage that a minimum of 40% of the waste from all construction sites be recycled throughout the city by the end of 2008.

"This plan is imperative to moving forward with the necessary steps we all must take as a community to ensure the environmental safety and sustainability of Riverside today and well into the future," Mayor Loveridge said.
