So much for thorium; COMMENT & DEBATE YOUR LETTERS TO THE NATIONAL NEWSPAPER OF WALES.

* SIR - So Thorium reactors are the answer to our energy needs (Letters, June 20)? Perhaps Bryan Prescott can tell us how we will achieve the necessary reactions to create energy without injecting uranium 233 into the process? And I also hate to say this but even with thorium's apparent abundance there does not appear to be any deposits of it in Wales or the UK.

For 50-plus years the nuclear industry has promised us variations on "energy too cheap to meter" and yet despite the billions "invested" in it (far more than has ever been given to renewables and energy efficiency) it has still to deliver on this.

And it would seem that the potential environmental destruction to be caused in South Wales due to shale gas extraction will pay for the latest nuclear fantasy.

As Ffos-y-fran and Wylfa prove, those who oppose wind turbines are all too happy to see far more destructive impositions forced on Wales as "it's not in their backyards".

It's time for them to face a little reality and stop trying to prop up the failed technology that is nuclear. Renewables including wind farms along with energy efficiency are the future.

I take it Mr Prescott and co will be campaigning for Wales' first thorium reactor to be built in Caerphilly? NIGEL BAKER Cardiff
