Sniper killed by headshot.

A TOP British sniper was shot dead by a Taliban marksman from 800 metres away, an inquest heard yesterday

Senior Aircraftman Ryan Tomlin, 21, was protecting a foot patrol in Afghanistan when they came under fire.

He was struck in the head with a single bullet and his team evacuated him from Dashte in central Helmand.

But SAC Tomlin, of 2nd Squadron of the Royal Air Force Regiment, died on the journey to a field hospital. Yesterday coroner Edward Thomas said: "The gunshot wound would have caused devastating injury, immediate unconsciousness and almost immediate death.

"Nothing anyone could have done would have saved him."

SAC Tomlin - on his second tour of duty - was shot on an Allied mission in February, the inquest in Hatfield, Herts, heard.

The family of SAC Tomlin, from Hemel Hempstead, said: "Ryan will never be forgotten."

Mr Thomas recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.
