Snaps with rare insight.

Byline: By Beth Neil

One of Newcastle's most popular museums is showing off a photographic exhibition with a difference. Beth Neil reports

A fascinating and thought-provoking collection of photographs and personal stories is on display at Discovery Museum until February 18.

Showcasing the artistic talents of people with a learning disability, their families, friends and carers, Snap! offers a rare insight into their lives.

The pictures have been selected from more than 800 entries to a competition organised by Mencap, the UK's leading charity for children and adults with a learning disability.

The display, previously shown at the V&A Museum in London and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford, brings together the best photographs and stories as chosen by a panel of judges, including former Guardian picture editor Eamonn McCabe.

Jo Williams, Mencap chief executive, said: "Visit the Discovery Museum to see first-class photography and to have your views challenged.

"You will see the talents and abilities of people with a learning disability and a variety of images that portray the range of human emotions."

Mencap hopes that seeing the photographs and reading the personal stories will help increase understanding and empathy to contribute to the ultimate aim of ending discrimination against people with a learning disability.

There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, and nine out of 10 face being bullied and discriminated against all their lives.

The exhibition is funded by Arts Council England and is sponsored by Halifax Card Services and is part of Mencap's month-long campaign in the North East, Opening Up New Worlds.

The campaign invites the public to become involved in creating a better world of opportunities for people with a learning disability, by volunteering, donating money and fundraising.

NDiscovery Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. Entry is free.

NFor an entry form to the Snap! 2005 photo competition e-mail or call Mencap's New Worlds hotline, 0800 013 1480. The closing date is March 1.
