Snack brands continue to drive growth for PIM.
ALLENDALE, N.J. -- Promotion In Motion Inc. (PIM) is one of the 50 largest global confectionery and snack companies and has been ranked one of the fastest-growing consumer packaged goods companies by the Boston Consulting Group and IRI four times in the past seven years. The company, founded in 1980 by current president and chief executive officer Michael Rosenberg, has a mission to delight consumers with high-quality and innovative confections and snacks.
A staple of the company's portfolio has been Welch's Fruit Snacks, which has experienced more than $300 million in retail sales, according to IRI, and has been growing by double digits since it launched in 2001. "The brand and product line appeal to a broad range of consumers, whether as a lunch box snack, at home, at work or on-the-go," says senior vice president of marketing Josh Shapiro. "A hallmark of Welch's Fruit Snacks is its unique and proprietary formula, which features fruit as our first ingredient (unlike many other brands)."
Besides its core fruit snacks portfolio, the brand has other snack offerings, including Welch's Fruit Rolls and Welch's Fruit 'n Yogurt Snacks, which feature centers made with real fruit that are surrounded by delicious creamy yogurt.
To address consumers' health needs and desire for choice, Welch's Fruit Snacks offers two of its flavor varieties in a Reduced Sugar format, featuring the same great taste but with 25% less sugar. This is important for schools, which have specific guidelines on sugar, fat and other ingredients.
On the confectionery side, PIM has invested in the development of new brands and its base, which has grown more than 50% in the past year. In 2018 the company launched Original Gummi FunMix, a unique combination of more than 60 flavors, colors, textures and shapes across five dynamic varieties. "It is a literal "party in a bag," Shapiro says.
The brand has achieved significant distribution across many classes of trade, including drug, grocery, mass, club, convenience, movie theaters, vending and travel. The company is supporting the brand with heavy investment in digital and social media, sampling, consumer activation (including a Live Nation partnership), and in-store.
For 2019-2020, PIM is also working on refreshing other brands in its portfolio, including Sun-Maid Chocolate Raisins and Sour Jacks sour chewy candy.
Shapiro notes that to support its growth now and into the future, PIM is investing $30 million in expansion of its Franklin Township, N.J., manufacturing, warehousing and distribution facilities, which will result in more than 750,00 square feet of space and around 50 million pounds of additional volume.
"PIM is committed to continuing its rapid pace of growth and innovation for years to come," he concludes.
