This special issue of the European Respiratory Monograph presents papers from European Respiratory Society research seminars and conferences held during the past two years, on tobacco control and harm reduction strategies. Some topics discussed include the role of chest physicians in tobacco control, smoking cessation in public health and in clinical practices, and the economics of smoking cessation. Other subjects covered include communicating with the smoking patient, psychological and behavioral interventions for smoking cessation, pharmacological treatment, lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography, and surgery and smoking cessation. Nardini, head of the Pulmonary and Tuberculosis Unit of the Morelli Hospital, Italy, holds leadership positions in several organizations active in smoking prevention and tobacco-related health issues.
