Smoking Arbroath bobby hits form in title triumph; BOWLS.

Byline: Adam Scriven

DARREN BURNETT claimed the Welsh International Open crown in Swansea yesterday, convincingly beating Simon Skelton in the final, writes Adam Scriven.

Burnett, RPSPORT's 20-1 headline tip before the tournament started, needed a tie-breaker to get past qualifier Brett Wilkie in his semi-final earlier in the day, but his supporters were given few anxious moments as he demolished 15th seed Skelton 9-4 9-5 with an end to spare in the second set.

Skelton, a 25-1 chance at the outset, had earlier registered a comfortable 10-5 8-2 defeat of Robert Weale to reach his second Welsh Open final in as many years.

Arbroath bobby Burnett had beaten world No. 1 Alex Marshall in the second round of the season-ending event, and his performance this week sees him break into the top 16.

That opens up a host of opportunities on the world tour for the 33-year-old next season, as he will no longer have to go through the qualifying rounds.
