Smoke from fire reaches M6.

A FIRE destroyed a timber building at the site of an ex-servicemen's club in Birmingham, causing smoke to billow across the M6.

The blaze took hold at a large outhouse building at the back of Ward End Ex-Servicemen's Association, situated on Ward End Park Road, at around 3.30pm.

Smoke was billowing on to the M6 affecting both directions between Junction 6 at Birmingham and Junction 5 at Castle Bromwich. The fire caused traffic problems as Ward End Park Road was closed while the incident was dealt with. Police were present to direct traffic.

It took firefighters two hours to bring the blaze under control. The building was totally gutted.

A fire investigation is now underway to discover how it started.
