Smithfield Foods.

Smithfield Foods, Smithfield, Va., announced a four-point environmental program, with an initial emphasis on its pork production operations in North Carolina, where some areas have been devastated by recent hurricanes. Smithfield's commitment includes: 1) completion of an assessment and evaluation of Smithfield's pork production facilities that may be located in 100-year flood plain areas in North Carolina; 2) evaluation of company-owned facilities that may involve unique operational challenges; 3) expansion of its Environmental Management System program throughout its corporate operations over the next three years, with an initial focus on the pork production operations in North Carolina; 4) establishment of a corporate environmental management committee; and 5) undertaking a major research and development effort to address alternative animal waste management systems.
