Smith in hot seat.

Wolves 3 Oxford 1

Oxford manager Denis Smith last night hit back at the sending-off that could land him in trouble with the FA.

Smith was ordered from the dug-out nine minutes from the end after he had tried to pass on instructions to his players while making a double substitution.

"I was trying to organise things and people don't always like the way I do it," he said afterwards.

"I suppose more will be made of this than of the match itself, which I thought was a good one. Unfortunately, we shot ourselves in the backside."

Referee Roy Pearson invited Smith to take a seat in the upper tier of the main stand after an altercation with a linesman in which he took a couple of strides on to the pitch.

Smith's feelings were already running high following two appalling defensive mistakes that led to his side conceding three goals for the third game in succession.

After 13 minutes, man of the match Simon Osborn slotted low and right- footed into the corner from 20 yards after a back-heel from Don Goodman.

It was no surprise when Oxford equalised after 34 minutes through midfielder Martin Gray.

But Wolves were a different proposition after the interval. Goodman rounded keeper Phil Whitehead for their second after 63 minutes.

Three minutes later, he squared for Osborn to slide home his second.
