Smile! It's time for silver selfies.

YOUNG people are being encouraged to explain the picture craze selfies to older relatives and friends when they see them on Mother's Day - and get them taking part.

BT is behind the campaign which wants people to share their digital skills with some of the 6.7m UK adults who have not previously been online.

A selfie is a self-portrait photograph taken typically on a smartphone or webcam and then uploaded to a social media site. The term became Oxford Dictionaries word of the year in 2013.

BT wants 16 to 25 year olds across the UK to teach someone how to take a selfie on March 30 and share the picture on Twitter via @BTBetterFuture using the PSSilverSelfie hashtag with location settings turned on.

The most creative selfie will win a laptop and tickets to Rock Assembly, a concert at Wembley Arena on July 9. The winner will be selected by a panel of BT judges and announced on April 7. BT Digital Champions, part of BT's Connected Society programme, is behind silver selfie day.

Anna Easton, programme director of BT Connected Society, said: "We will be judging the Silver Selfie competition on creativity, setting and in some cases, humour for the chance to win two great prizes."
