SmartTalk Announces Agreement with Epic; Business Partner Agreement Provides Patient Communication Solution.

BOULDER, Colo.--(BW HealthWire)--July 6, 1999--

SmartTalk(R) Inc., of Boulder, and Epic(R) Systems Corp., of Madison, Wis., Tuesday announced the signing of a business partner agreement.

Epic, developers of integrated systems for ambulatory care, and SmartTalk, developers of patient communications tools and services, will team up to provide Epic customers with integrated patient communication solutions.

Initially, an interface will be developed between Cadence, Epic's enterprise-wide scheduling system, and SmartTalk's multi-threaded, multi-tasking communication engine.

Epic customers will then be able to add automated appointment reminders and confirmation, schedule change notification, wellness and recall message delivery, around-the-clock test result delivery, satisfaction surveys and other SmartTalk applications to their list of services.

Plans are in the works to expand the SmartTalk integration to include Epic's other applications: computerized patient records, managed care, and patient accounting.

Steve Larsen, director of research and development at Epic said, "The integration between Cadence and SmartTalk provides instant benefits for schedulers. They can take advantage of SmartTalk's automated features without switching to another application or changing their workflow. It essentially eliminates the need to manually confirm appointments."

Bill O'Connell, SmartTalk vice president of sales said, "Recent studies show that, in the past two years, 50 million U.S. households selected or changed their physician. Dissatisfaction with the quality of communication was cited as one of the top two reasons for changing doctors, and 52 percent of patients say that satisfaction with their physician depends upon communication.

"SmartTalk has innovative applications and solutions that will improve communication and increase patient retention for Epic customers. We look forward to meeting many of those customers at the Epic User Conference in September."
