Smart Coatings conference held.

Eastern Michigan University's Coatings Research Institute will present Smart Coatings 2005, February 16-18 at the Grosvenor Resort and Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista/Orlando, FL.

This three-day conference will focus on advances in such areas as anti-microbial and hygienic coatings; organic nanotechnology based coatings; stimulus and response coatings; and self-assembled intelligent layers.

Session 1 on smart coatings will include the following presentations: "21st century materials: Coatings that interact with their environment," Robert F. Brady, Naval Research Lab; "Technology to efficiently fabricate photonic crystal materials for controlling light transmission and chemical sensing applications," Sanford A. Asher, University of Pittsburgh; "Fouling-resistant, active Xerogel coatings doped with peroxide-activating catalysts," Michael R. Detty, SUNY; and "pH-responsive copolymer films by surface-catalyzed polymerization," G. Kane Jennings, Dongshun Bai and Brian M. Habersberger, Vanderbilt University.

Session 2 on stimuli responsive coatings will include the following presentations: "Stimuli responsive smart polymer films," Sergiy Minko, Clarkson University; "Thermoset siloxane-urethane fouling release coatings," Dean C. Webster, Partha Majumdar, Abdullah Ekin and Robert Pieper, North Dakota State University; "Synthesis and formulation of a removable conformal coating using Diels-Alder thermally-reversible adducts," J.H. Aubert, D.R. Tallant, P.S. Sawyer and M.J. Garcia, Sandia National Laboratories; and "Additives containing nanomaterials--paradigm shift in parquet coatings formulations," John Du and Klaus Shulte, BYK Chemie.

Session 3 on antimicrobial materials and coatings will include the following presentations: "Anatase Ti[O.sub.2] nanocomposites for antimicrobial coatings," Guifen Fu, Patricia S. Vary and Chhiu-Tsu Lin, Northern Illinois University; "Cleanability and antimicrobial efficacy of a titanium dioxide coating," Robert S. Donofrio, Robin Bechanko, Audra Bildeaux and Maryann Sanders, NSF International; "Formulation and evaluation of organic antibicrobial coatings," D.L. Clemans, S.J. Rhoades, J.J. Kendzorski, Q. Xu and J. Baghdachi, Eastern Michigan University; and "Chitosan-based polymeric core-shell particles as antimicrobial agents for cotton," Pei Li, Weijun Ye, Man-Fai Leung, John Xin, Tsz-Leung Kwong and Kam-Len Lee, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
