Small and simple, but it seems spacious.

GEOMETRIC SIMPLICITY and effective, view-oriented siting at the edge of a hill won praise for this vacation house.

The 1,500-square-foot house--as basic in form as an old-fashioned box camera--is sandwiched between concrete-block ends, one containing a sauna, the other a fireplace. The camera's lens is the ground-floor living area's big window, focused on a dramatic rectilinear pool and view beyond.

The pool platform attracted special notice. Juror Jones admired its use as "a dynamic focal element," and Hood applauded the way "it reaches out to the landscape." In addition, jurors liked the thoughtful use of humble materials like plywood and concrete block. Goldstein summed up: "The house is small but seems airy and spacious."
