Small Cities Council plans full conference agenda.

The Small Cities Council and the Small Cities Steering Committee will meet on March 7 and 8, in Washington, D.C. at the annual Congressional City Conference. The development of long-range goals is a top priority of the 1992 Small Cities Council.

"Setting long-range goals will ensure that the work of the Small Cities Council will continue from year to year with minimal interruption," said Jimmy Burke, mayor of Deer Park, Texas and chair of the Small Cities Council. Burke traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to meet with NLC Executive Director Don Borut and to set the SCC agenda for the Congressional City Conference.

Ensuring that the issues and concerns of all small cities--suburban and rural--are adequately addressed will be the focus of discussion at the March steering committee meeting. Balancing the needs of suburban and rural cities has been an on-going challenge for the Small Cities Council.

"There are numerous programs targeted for rural and small communities but you don't come across too many programs that help suburban small cities." "Suburban small cities seem to fall between the cracks", said Mayor Burke. "Were too small to qualify for big city assistance and too large and urban to qualify for rural and small community assistance."

A short survey has been mailed to approximately 500 small city officials across the country. The results of the survey should provide the SCC with information about how many small cities consider themselves suburban or rural and what the most important issues that confront small cities today. Information from the survey will be shared with SCC members at the Congressional City Conference in March and will be utilized by the steering committee to establish sub-committees and a work plan for 1992.
