Smail steps up the pace.

NEW ZEALAND golfer David Smail continued to press for top spot at the Canon Open after he shot a superb fiveunder 67 in the third round. The first round of the Japan Tour in Yokohama was cancelled due to typhoon conditions.

But Smail, who shot a 69 on Friday, took the game by the scruff of the neck and bagged five birdies by the 10th hole.

Smail, who is in a sevenway tie for third on 136, is three shots behind Japanese leader Kenichii Kuboya.
