Slim Riahi sentenced to five years in prison over issuing NSF checks.
(TAP) -- The Tunis Court of First Instance, on Monday, sentenced businessman and president of the Free Patriotic Union (UPL) Slim Riahi to five years in prison for issuing NSF checks.
This sentence will not be enforced as it will be cancelled once an appeal is lodged, member of the UPL's politburo Yosra Mili said.
"This ruling will not be implemented. Riahi's lawyers will appeal this decision as soon as possible," she told TAP.
"Slim Riahi had regularised all of the NSF checks. The defence had submitted a proof of payment during the first hearing," he affirmed.
Surprised by the verdict, the defence was expecting the cancellation of the fines during this second hearing, she pointed out.
In this regard, Mili reported a dysfunction in Fine Recovery Procedures.
The Public Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance, on August 4, issued a wanted notice against Slim Riahi for issuing NSF checks.
Spokesman for the Court of First Instance Sofiene Selliti said Slim Riahi was sentenced in absentia to prison terms for issuing NSF checks with immediate execution.
Accompanied by his lawyers, Riahi had appeared before the court on august 14 to appeal the verdicts in absentia delivered against him.
He had provided supporting documents proving the payment of the checks and requested postponement of the examination of the judgments rendered against him in the case of the payment of fines.
The investigating judge of the judicial economic and financial division had ordered on June 28 the freezing of assets of Slim Riahi over suspected money laundering.
