Slaughter on the farm; Meanwhile back in the land of the soaps...

Randy rural soap Emmerdale is heading for slaughter on the farm as TEN characters get the chop.

Steamy storylines of sex in the Yorkshire Dales have put the ITV series within striking distance of BBC's EastEnders.

Now bosses believe new faces and more sensational plots will help it leapfrog EastEnders to become the nation's second favourite soap after Coronation Street. Emmerdale producer Mervyn Watson has drawn up a list of actors who will be booted out in December.

Favourites Biff Fowler, played by Stuart Wade, and his screen lover Linda Glover - actress Tonicha Jeronimo - are part of the huge clear-out.

Peter Amory, who plays grouchy wheelchair-bound Chris Tate, will also be leaving. Peter, married in real life to Emmerdale bitch Kim Tate - played by Claire King - will stun fans with his departure.

Claire, who helped boost ratings to 12 million with her sex romps, shocked bosses last month when she said she wanted to quit.

Her screen lover Ian Kelsey, who plays randy farm manager Dave Glover, is also leaving at the end of the year.

And Woolpack landlord Terry Woods - actor Billy Hartman - and Scott and Viv Windsor, played by Toby Cockerell and Deena Payne, are also to go.

An Emmerdale insider said: "There will be a massive Christmas clear-out with ten people not having contracts renewed.

"The producer is not a popular man at the moment. But he is determined to keep Emmerdale looking fresh."
