Sky's the limit after two accountancy firms merge.

Byline: Iain Laing

ATYNESIDE accountancy firm which specialises in working with start-ups and small to medium-sized enterprises has merged with a Sunderland company to grow its business into Wearside. Blu Sky Accountants, based in North Shields, North Tyneside, has merged with Red Sky Bookkeeping in the first move of its plans to win new business further across the North East.

Red Sky was set up three years ago by Susan Lang, who had previously worked in partnership with Blu Sky and will now assume the role of technical manager at the business. Blu Sky will also look to appoint a new apprentice to prepare for future growth and in the longer term may look to open further offices in the region.

Lang had been working as a subcontractor with Blu Sky for the past year and, after being impressed by the standard of her work, Blu Sky initially opened discussions over a possible joint venture which later evolved into the merger. Blu Sky was also attracted to the move because of the many SME business opportunities in the Sunderland area.

Dave Gibson, partner at Blu Sky, said: "In the next two or three years we want to consolidate our place in the market and now that we have Susan on board, we would like to increase our presence in Sunderland also.

"We want much more of a regional presence than just in North Tyneside." Fellow partner Jon Dudgeon said: "The number of new start-up and existing SME businesses in Sunderland represents a real opportunity there and Susan is a great addition to the technical team and has given us a great chance to expand."

Red Sky's integration into Blu Sky will see Susan's regional and international portfolio of clients moved under the Tyneside firm's umbrella.

Susan added: "I'm very excited as I like the idea of offering my clients so much more by integrating with Blu Sky. I like the way Dave and Jon are proactive, client-focused and professional, but what I like the most is the relaxed and more informal 'no jargon' approach they offer clients."
