Skoda Design Chief Heads To Rolls-Royce.

For years, the Czech Skoda brand was regarded as a Communist joke car, particularly in the U.K. Now times have changed so much that Skoda's chief designer has been appointed head of design for the most British brand of all -- Rolls-Royce.

The move is simply an inter-company transfer for designer Dirk van Braeckel since both Rolls and Skoda are part of the Volkswagen Group. The Belgian van Braeckel, a former designer at Audi, led Skoda's development since 1993, prompting a remarkable turnaround thanks to the compact Felicia and midsize Octavia cars he designed.

Volkswagen also named Tony Gott chairman of its U.K. luxury car unit. The appointment was expected as Gott has served as acting chairman since late last year following the departure of Graham Morris.
