Skaf announces bid to head Order of Physicians.

Summary: Neurosurgeon Ghassan Skaf announced Thursday his bid to head the Order of Physicians in elections scheduled for May 19.

BEIRUT: Neurosurgeon Ghassan Skaf announced Thursday his bid to head the Order of Physicians in elections scheduled for May 19.

Addressing a news conference at the order's headquarters in Beirut, Skaf promised that should he win he would work toward enhancing physician revenues, securing decent lifetime health coverage and retirement benefits, and granting the media more access to accurate medical-related information.

Also on Skaf's agenda is boosting coordination with the authorities to safeguard doctors' immunity in cases of malpractice allegations.

"While the media and public have every right to demand professional and ethical practices from physicians, doctors also need to be protected from backlashes stemming from misunderstandings," he said.

Skaf heads the AUB Medical Center's Division of Neurosurgery, as well as the order's Scientific Committee.
