SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's assassin is hospitalized in stable condition after being stabbed by a fellow inmate at a Southern California prison. The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the stabbing of Sirhan Sirhan took place Friday afternoon at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego.

American dies in combat:

KABUL, Afghanistan -- An American service member was killed in combat operations in Afghanistan on Thursday, the U.S. military said, the third to be killed here in eight days. Thursday's death brings the total number of U.S. service members killed by hostile forces in Afghanistan this year to 15.

Fire reaches Salt Lake suburbs:

SALT LAKE CITY -- Firefighters battled a wildfire on Friday that had burned three homes, heavily damaged five more and prompted the evacuation of hundreds of people in two Salt Lake City suburbs. Occupants of more than 400 homes fled but no injuries were reported.

Twitter CEO hacked:

SAN FRANCISCO -- Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's account was hacked, and whoever broke in sent racist and vulgar tweets to his 4.2 million followers. Some of the tweets were up for about 30 minutes before Twitter took them down.

1,100 Sea lions may be killed:

BOISE, Idaho -- More than 1,100 sea lions could be killed annually along a stretch of the Columbia River on the Oregon-Washington border to boost faltering populations of salmon and steelhead, federal officials said Friday.

UN: Iran in violation of deal:

VIENNA -- The U.N. atomic watchdog reported Friday that Iran remains in violation of limitations set by the 2015 nuclear deal with major powers and its stockpile of low-enriched uranium is increasing.

More vaping illnesses:

WASHINGTON -- Health officials are recommending people who vape consider avoiding e-cigarettes while they investigate more cases of a breathing ailment linked to the devices. While the cause remains unclear, officials said Friday that many reports involve e-cigarette products that contain THC, a mind-altering substance in marijuana.

Dems drop virtual caucuses:

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Democrats' plans for virtual presidential caucuses in Iowa and Nevada are effectively dead as national party chairman Tom Perez said Friday the results would be vulnerable to hacking and abuse.

Illinois Rep. Shimkus won't run:

COLLINSVILLE -- U.S. Rep. John Shimkus, 61, of Illinois said Friday he won't run for re-election after more than 20 years in Congress, the 14th House Republican to decline a 2020 race. Shimkus represents the 15th District, which includes all or part of 33 counties stretching from central Illinois to near the southern tip. He won by just 1,200 votes in the 20th District in 1996 but has since coasted.

E-bikes OK'd for national parks:

WASHINGTON -- Motorized electric bicycles may soon be humming along serene trails in national parks and other public lands nationwide. Hotly opposed by many outdoors groups Interior Secretary David Bernhardt signed the order Thursday.
