Simple IR analyzer checks nylon layer in film. (Keeping Up with Auxiliaries).
A new portable infrared analyzer is designed for direct thickness measurements of nylon barrier layers in plastic films--even when the layer is as thin as 0.01 mil. The Infracal Filtometer Model CH-2 from Wilks Enterprise, Inc., S. Norwalk, Conn., completes its analysis in under a minute and eliminates the use of potentially hazardous solvents. It is also said to be a fraction of the cost of a standard FTIR spectrometer. The device is a fixed-filter mid-IR analyzer with a 333.3-cm filter/detector--an absorption wavelength that is unique to nylon. This enables the nylon to be measured without removing the surrounding plastic layers. A sample of the film is put into a standard card holder and placed in the analyzer. With the IR source on one side and the filter/detector on the other side, the IR absorbance is measured by transmission. This compact device measures 6.5 x 6.5 x 5 in., weighs less than 5 lb, and utilizes only 12V of DC power. Tel: (203) 855-9136, www.wilksir.com
