Ainsley Earhardt's Take Heart, My Child: A Mother's Dream (9781481466226, $18.99) was inspired by the author's own childhood and her father's inspirational notes, and shares the author's hopes and dreams as she lets her child know about life's difficulties and how to react to them. These are very simple admonitions especially suitable to read-aloud ("But if you get lost/In the ocean's vast tides/Take heart, my child/I'll be by your side.") and offer a seasonal appearance and themes as they provide gentle inspiration backed by a mother's love. Arun Gandhi and Bethany Hegedus's Be the Change: A Grandfather Gandhi Story (9781481442657, $18.99) provides a fine companion story to Grandfather Gandhi and tells of wastefulness and a service village that is filled with work that benefits all. The villagers decide to reflect Gandhi's concepts of living non-violently and simply, but Arun struggles with these values--and especially the admonition not to waste. Evan Turk's lovely drawings enhance this story of how wastefulness leads to violence. Gilbert Ford's The Marvelous Thing That Came from a Spring (9781481450652, $17.99) fictionalizes the story of the invention of the Slinky toy, and tells of how one man's observation of a floppy spring leads to a husband and wife's invention of the Slinky name and how they go about capitalizing on it. Kids with good reading skills will find this a fun survey.
