This engaging first novel is set in a treacherously magical landscape in the aftermath of a devastating war between humans and Faerie, when all surviving things in nature have become aggressively dangerous. After her mother leaves for unexplained reasons, Lisa (15) lives with her strong-willed, magic-hating father in an isolated village. Grieving for her mother and alarmed at increasing signs indicating she herself is infected with magic, Lisa learns the dreadful truth of the fate of her new-born sister. She runs away, followed by faithful friend Matthew who has magical secrets of his own, and after many dangers and attacks, they reach another village. Having been brought up to be suspicious of strangers, Lisa is confused by the kindness she finds there, and particularly by the presence of Karin and Caleb who, unbelievably, seem able to control magic. Determined to find her missing mother, prickly, brave Lisa and her companions are threatened by terrifying shadows and ghosts of the past war as they search across the malignant landscape. Even if they find her, how will any of them ever get home again? This is an intriguing, exciting and fresh story with unexpected plot twists, original setting and engaging characters, in particular the entertainingly direct child Allie. A very satisfying, dark fairy tale which should engage YA readers of both sexes--highly recommended.
