Nigel McCrery. 1996/2003. Read by Paddy Glynn. 8 cds. 8.33 hrs. ISIS Audio, dist. by UIverscroft. 0-7531-1726-6, $79.95. Vinyl; plot notes. SA

Forensic pathologist Dr. Samantha "Sam" Ryan is not convinced that Sebastian Bird is responsible for two ritualistic murders, even though circumstantial evidence indicates his guilt. Following slim leads that bring Sam closer to the real perpetrator puts her own life in danger. Glynn's British accent is perfect for this creepy thriller with enough bad guys to keep one guessing who the murderer might be and some very likable characters who don't deserve such a gruesome death. Although Glynn does not create a separate voice for each character, she does a fine reading and builds the tension. This is the first of a BBC series made for TV. Once a policeman himself, the author has included police and medical details that add authenticity to the intrigue. Carol Kellerman, Santa Fe, NM
