Silence of the lambs.

AN investigation has been launched on a Scottish island to find out if the mass disappearance of lambs is linked to golden eagles.

Crofters will be paid compensation if the losses can be proved to be the work of the predators.

The eagles, who nest on more than 20 eyries in the Uists, have been at the centre of claims that they have snatched scores of lambs. One crofter at Gramsdale claims that he lost 25 lambs last year alone.

Now a team of experts from the Scottish Agricultural and Scientific Agency (SASA) is investigating other cases.
