Signing comes up short; The Boot Room BEHIND THE HEADLINES WITH IAN CARBIS

HANNOVER coach Mirko Slomka has suffered the height of embarrassment after discovering his new signing was a lot smaller than he had imagined.

Slomka, right, had believed he was signing a giant 6ft 2in midfield enforcer when the transfer of Coritiba star Franca was agreed.

But when Slomka met the Brazilian for the first time at the press conference to announce his capture, Slomka was surprised to discover he was 5ft 10in.

Franca, who was signed on the recommendation of sporting director Joerg Schmadtke for PS1.1m, agreed a deal until 2016, but Slomka spoke of how the deal left him confused.

"What can I say, I was totally surprised," said Slomka after meeting Franca, full name Welington Wildy Muniz dos Santos.

"The one criterion had been to pay attention to the body size."
