Sigma-Aldrich buys chiral chromatography firm.

St. Louis, MO 10/9/06 -- Sigma-Aldrich has purchased Advanced Separation Technologies (Astec), a maker of columns and media for chiral chromatography. Terms were not disclosed. Based in Whippany, New Jersey, Astec has annual revenues of $2 million and will join Sigma-Aldrich's Research Specialties business. "In addition to a wide range of proprietary chiral chromatography products, the acquisition of Astec brings the specialized knowledge of chiral separations embodied in its people," said Russel Gant, vice president for Sigma-Aldrich's chromatography manufacturing site in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.

With this acquisition, Sigma-Aldrich will now offer chiral columns for liquid chromatography. Sigma-Aldrich's Supelco division currently sells chiral capillary gas chromatography columns. Mr. Gant told IBO, "With the addition of Astec, Supelco will be able to address the full range of chiral chromatography applications in tire pharmaceutical industry." The market for chiral columns for pharmaceutical applications is fast growing (see IBO 9/15/06).
