Sick are safer at home.

THE news that HIQA are about to launch an investigation into Tallaght Hospital's emergency department is a step forward.

Unfortunately it seems like one step forward, and two steps back.

The fact that the country's busiest A&E department is in such a sorry state in the first place is a grave cause for concern.

Just last week a county coroner said sick people would be safer at home than in Tallaght hospital.

Let's make this clear - this is not a hospital in a war zone, or a Third World country.

This is not Calcutta, or Afghanistan. This is a country that, until a few short years ago, was one of the richest in the world.

And even then, our health care system was crumbling.

Our hospitals need to be completely gutted and rebuilt, from the inside out.

And it will take more than just one investigation to fix that.
