Showdown demanded on official's ouster.

HARDWICK - The town Finance Committee is insisting on an explanation from Town Moderator John Campbell on why he did not reappoint Edward F. Banas to a second three-year term to the Finance Committee.

The committee last week voted to send a letter to Mr. Campbell asking him for a second time to appear before the committee.

Town bylaws give the moderator authority to make appointments to the finance committee when terms have expired, and Mr. Campbell did not reappoint Mr. Banas earlier this year. Mr. Campbell appointed Norman Mackinnon to replace Mr. Banas.

A previous letter the committee sent Mr. Campbell on Aug. 15 said: "We have been questioned by several individuals, and without hearing it from you directly, we do not feel we can answer or explain the appointments that were made this year."

In response, Mr. Campbell said in a letter dated Aug 20: "It would be highly inappropriate for the Town Moderator to appear before an inquisition such as you have proposed. The Moderator makes the appointments; he is not obligated to make explanations."
