Show absentee nips in to top Welshpool's BFL sale.

PRICES topped at 950gns for a tup that didn't even appear in this year's pre-sale society show of Bluefaced Leicesters.

Sale leader at Welshpool (Thurs, Sept 27) was a shearling ram from the performance-recorded Gornal flock of Phil Davies, Four Crosses, Llanymynech. Sold with a recorded index of 336, the tup is fully homebred.

Show judge Mrs E Helme, Cumbria, found her champion in the female pen from Phil May's Derwenlas flock, also based in Four Crosses.

This was an eye-catching homebred ewe sired by Braegarrie which fetched 440gns and went home with Myrfyn, Jayne and Gareth Roberts, of the Myfyrian flock, Gaerwen.

Reserve champion was the male leader, an outstanding ram lamb from the performance-recorded Craig Yr Orsedd flock run by Aled and Rachel Jones, Meddiant Isa, Talycafn.

Fully homebred, the lamb was shown in the open class and was this year's winner of the RP Williams Trophy.

Reserve male champion was the first prize recorded ram lamb from Elfyn Owen's Cernyw flock, Llanddoged, while the reserve female was another from Phil May, this time a homebred ewe lamb. Averages: Shrlg rams av PS439.30; Ram lambs av PS280.88.
