Should all board members be paid?
THE BOARD is to seek independent advice on whether board members should be paid, given their increased responsibility and liability associated with legislative changes. The president and kaiwhakahaere are paid, while other board members are not. Musa pointed out board members are covered under NZNO's indemnity insurance. Some board members felt the new board structure had increased the workload and pressure on board members and this was not necessarily well understood by the wider membership. When the issue had been discussed previously, with input from te poari and the membership committee, feedback had been that it was not appropriate to pay board members for attending meetings.
* The board approved a professional development policy for all board members. An annual amount of $3000 per board member has been budgeted for and the money will not accumulate if not used. The board will approve all professional development applications and members will report back to the board on the professional development they undertake. *
* These decisions were made at the February board of directors' meeting.
