Shops join forces.

A SHOPWATCH scheme has helped keep crime levels down.

Police helped businesses set up a monitoring scheme in Gateshead and the Team Valley Trading Estate (TVTE) to help fight retail crime.

Gateshead South neighbourhood policing team PC Racheal Brennan, who has responsibility for TVTE, said the scheme, which has been running for a year, has been a great success.

She said: "Having the help and support of the police has made businesses feel more confident in reporting issues."

Around 25 businesses now have a radio link hooking them up to other businesses that monitor CCTV cameras.

The scheme hopes to introduce exclusion notices to keep known criminals off the TVTE.
