Shopping habits; Your say.

MARIANNE Robson writes 'Hidden gems' (13.6.13) that she hears many people say they never go to Stockton any more as it is full of pound and charity shops etc but there are some "hidden gems" off the High Street and if people changed their shopping habits and returned to the town centres all would be well.

Can I suggest that she is putting the cart before the horse by asking shoppers to change their habits.

Why don't the "hidden gems" move into the High Street so shoppers don''t have to search the town to find them.

I suspect that the answer would be that High Street rent and rates are too high.

The alternative ie the out of centre retail parks with free parking is a no brainer so far as customers are concerned.

The local authorities don''t care as they collect wherever you shop, as they have a legal monopoly on rates collection.

As a Boro boy born and bred, I loved going to Stockton market in years gone by and am, like many others, sad to see its decline but this is the world we now live in.
