The number of Brits who are morbidlyobese is set to sky-rocket over the next 17 years, according to a worrying new study.

Researchers from the Institute of Technology in Sligo, Ireland, suggest that by 2035, four million people across England, Wales and Scotland will be morbidly obese.

This is more than double the 1.9 million who were morbidly obese in 2015.

In the study, the researchers used height and weight data from national surveys to create a model predict BMI trends over the next 17 years.

The researchers, led by Dr Laura Keaver, said: "Our study reveals a worrying picture of rising morbid obesity across England, Wales, and Scotland that is likely to weigh heavily on healthcare systems and economies.

The researchers also looked at which people are most likely to be morbidly obese in the future.

The researchers added: "Our findings highlight that future interventions to tackle obesity must be accessible to everyone and should be designed to impact all sectors of society to further reduce these inequalities."
