Shirakawa Motel.

Shirakawa Motel, Box 467, Waiohinu 92722; 929-7462. Nestled in a lush valley 1,000 feet above the sea level, this family-run motel claims to be the southernmost inn in the United States. Seventeen bare-wall, side-by-side rooms, all with baths and two with kitchenettes, cost $15 singles, $18 for doubles ($22 with kitchenette), and $7 extra for a roll-away bed. The only restaurant is in nearby Naalehu.

This is a good stop en route from Kailua to the Kilauea Crater and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, 36 miles to the northeast. Hilo is anotherh 30 miles northeast.

From the Shirakawa, you can drive west 3-1/2 miles on State 11, then south 11 miles along the bumpy paved South Point Road to Ka Lae, the southermost point in the United States.

Look for the Shirakawa sing 1/8 mile east of the Kauahaao Church in Waiohinu; its entrance is thickly forested, easy to miss.
