Ship repair facility to open at ADPC\ s Free Port.

Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has revealed that a ship repair facility is to be established at Free Port, UAE.

Topaz Marine Engineering Division (TMED) plans to open the facility on land that it has leased from ADPC as part of a one-year contract with the option to extend to three years.

Piracy victim, Maersk Alabama , featured in the motion picture Captain Phillips , will be the first vessel to undergo repairs at the repair hub.

"We are very pleased about the establishment of this new ship repair facility, and very proud to have welcomed the famous Maersk Alabama as our first customer," said Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, chief executive officer of ADPC.

"The new facility completes our offerings in the Free Port and will significantly facilitate trade. The location of the facility is ideal as it is close to Abu Dhabi's main shipping channel and offers quick turnaround times," he added.

Located next to Abu Dhabi's Zayed Port, the facility will provide support to the UAE marine sector. TMED will employ more than 150 skilled professionals to conduct an array of repairs, including workshop, afloat, underwater, fuel injection, governor, marine automation, instrumentation, hydraulic, boiler, and transmission applications.

"We are very proud to fly the flag for ship repair in Abu Dhabi, and could not have found a better location than ADPC Free Port in which to set up this enterprise," said Geoff Taylor, managing director of Topaz Marine .

"From our first discussions until the opening of the facility, ADPC has supported us at every level and we are honoured to be associated with such an esteemed and forward-thinking organisation," he added.

Under the terms of the agreement between ADPC and TMED, the former will lease the berth and adjacent area of land to the latter. In turn, TMED will provide the floating dock necessary for repairs to be conducted at the site.
