Ship exports post 1st gain in 2 years in 1999.

TOKYO, Jan. 19 Kyodo

Exports of newly built ships by Japanese shipbuilders totaled 8,733,590 gross tons in 1999, up 21.5% for the first yearly increase in two years, the Japan Ship Exporters' Association said Wednesday.

The increase was due largely to brisk orders from Greek shipowners for inexpensive bulk ships.

In volume, Japanese shipbuilders exported 237 vessels, an increase of 93 over last year, the industry association said.

Orders from Greek shipowners rose eightfold to 1,277,000 gross tons, while those from U.S. and European shipping companies came to 1,714,000 gross tons, up 19.9%.
