Shimoni gets off the mark for Moore; KEMPTON.

Byline: by Gavin Beech

DAVID PROBERT extended his lead in the Weatherbys Bank sponsored Apprentice Series when he finished second on Show Winner, taking his total to 30 points, six points clear of nearest rival William Carson.

The 1m3f contest was won by 20-1 chance Shimoni who stayed on best under Gemma Marshall to make a winning debut for new trainer Gary Moore, having left William Knight earlier in the year.

David Wilson, assistant to Gary Moore, said: "We've had her four or five months and she's taken time to come to herself but she did that well and she appreciated the strong pace as she gets further than this. There has been some talk of giving her another try over hurdles, but she ideally wants a bit of cut in the ground."

It has been a quiet year for Ian Wood, but the Lambourn trainer is hoping to have turned the corner after Anthill took Wood's total into double figures for the calendar year when winning the 1m handicap. Anthill, excellently ridden by George Baker, was winning at the 12th time of asking but she couldn't have got the job done in more impressive fashion and her trainer is hoping this signals a return to form.

"Things have been quiet this summer but it's been a problem for lots of trainers in Lambourn, and there is no explanation for it.

"This filly is really maturing now and the key to her is getting her settled, which George did beautifully. I told George to ride her to get the trip but it didn't prove an issue and she could have been called the winner a long way out."
