Shettysnubs ' idiotic'debate.

SALMAN Khan, the king of Bollywood's ` 100- crore club, often jokes about not being able to beat the box office record of his friend mir Khan's film, 3 Idiots . To Salman Khan's bad luck, his bete noir Shah Rukh Khan has managed to achieve the feat that he perhaps secretly wishes to achieve for himself. Shah Rukh's film Chennai Express had amassed ` 212 crore ( till August 26), shattering the record held by 3 Idiots which had earned ` 202.47 crore -- the highest theatrical returns in India till now.

But Chennai Express director Rohit Shetty is not one to go to town about his success.

When asked to comment on the stupendous ride of the film at box office, he said: " I am happy the film is doing well and huge revenue has been generated. It is very idiotic when someone says you have broken 3 Idiots' record.

" On record, I would like to say that 3 Idiots is a great film. You can't compare Chennai Express to 3 Idiots . Yes, my film's business has crossed 3 Idiots' revenue . But to make it sound like we are claiming that Chennai Express is a greater film or a better film is silly. If 3 Idiots had released today, it would have earned ` 235 or ` 240 crore." SRK's latest film with its right dosage of action and comedy was lapped up by audiences both in India and abroad. That the other big film Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobara ( OUATIMD), which was released a week late, r did not find favour with the audience helped Chennai Express immensely.

The Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan starrer directed by Milan Luthria only managed to garner ` 57.5 crore in two weeks.

Interestingly, both Chennai Express and OUATIMD did not fetch glowing reviews from critics. Yet, the SRK film raced miles ahead of its competitor.

3 Idiots had released on December 23 2009. It has taken another Bollywood film nearly more than three- and- a- half years to break its record.

Trade pundits have already started debating which film will break the record set by the SRK- starrer. This year, Krrish 3 starring Hrithik Roshan and mir Khan starrer Dhoom 3 look the hottest contenders.
