Sherri L. Board, Successful Crime Novelist, Immerses Herself in Research for Realistic Approach.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 2003

Successful crime novelist, Sherri L. Board, prides herself on the amount of behind-the-scenes research she does in preparation for each of her popular Katlin LaMar mystery novels. The view of the inner workings of law enforcement really makes Board's books stand out from the competition. Thanks to the large doses of reality integrated into her story lines -- something for which she has her brother to thank -- Board makes her readers feel as if they're actually a part of the story.

Board's mystery/crime novels center around a positive female role model -- something unheard of in crime novels until just recently. The lead character, Katlin LaMar, is a probation officer serving on a gang violence suppression unit who has a really big heart for kids. The career choice for LaMar is the result of a suggestion made by Board's brother Timothy Board, JD, a Lieutenant with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, currently working in the Jail Division's Public Affair's Office. "When I was first creating my lead character, she was a social worker. But Timmy thought that wouldn't necessarily lend itself toward a lead character with enough field involvement for a wide variety of story lines. Instead, Timmy suggested making her a probation officer serving on this unique gang violence suppression unit," explains Board.

However, as Board goes on to explain, her brother's career doesn't really play a role in her story lines -- yet. On the other hand, "Timmy's career has been invaluable to me as an author, as he has a contact pool that is every mystery writer's dream. I mean, when I wanted to write about an autopsy, Timmy got me in to see a `live' one. When I wanted to write about a bloodhound, he hooked me up with the real officers actually working for the Orange County Search and Rescue Unit. Timmy's hooked me up with DA investigators and homicide cops.

"The greatest gift that came from my brother's career, however, was his introducing me to Colleene Preciado, who was once the director of Juvenile Hall in Orange County, but is now Chief Deputy Probation Officer of Orange County. This woman is the spiritual inspiration for my protagonist, Katlin LaMar," exclaims Board.

Board's love of the mystery genre developed after reading Mary Higgins Clark's novel, "I'll Be Seeing You." Since then, she has never looked back. Board's first Katlin LaMar mystery, "Angels of Anguish," was published in 1999, followed by "Blind Belief," in 2002 -- both of which have received rave reviews. A resident of Irvine, California, Board is currently working on the third novel in her popular Katlin LaMar mystery series, entitled "In Father's Absence."

Board loves to hang out with probation officers, DA investigators, narcotics agents, cops, pathologists, gangbangers, public defenders, ballistic specialists -- every sort of human being who will bring depth and twists and turns to her mysteries.

She is a member of Sisters of Crime, Mystery Writers of America, the Police Writers Association, and the American Crime Writers League. She also volunteers for the Orange County Bar Foundation's ShortStop Program, a unique juvenile crime diversion program.

When Board's not writing, she loves reading, traveling, sailing and hiking, and buries her toes in the sand whenever possible. She also enjoys traveling the United States in her motor home, and jumping aboard an airplane to explore different countries like Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Mexico.
