Sheraton Moana.

Newly painted, Honolulu's Moana hotel, built in 1901, fairly gleams in the morning sun. It offers such esthetic relief amid Waikiki's skyscrapers that strollers along Kalakaua Avenue can't seem to resist coming in for a look.

Free hour-long guided tours highlight the recent $50-million restorations that returned this historic landmark to its early elegance. Hawaii's first luxury resort, the Moana accommodated queens and presidents, and Amelia Earhart was a guest just before her final flight.

Restored according to original records and photographs, a porte-cochere once again shades arriving guests, and a sweeping wood staircase and brass bird-cage elevator offer graceful access to upper floors. Antique furnishings include a couch that once belonged to Hawaiian King David Kalakaua, and cabinets made of rare koa wood display historical mementos.

Tours also stop under the 104-year-old banyan tree in a courtyard facing the beach. For more than 30 "Hawaii Calls" beamed Hawaiian music from here to Mainland radio listeners.

Tea is served on the veranda from 3:30 to 5:30 ($10.75 includes scones, finger sandwiches, pastries, and a choice of teas), and beverages are available in the courtyard from about 11 A.M. to half past midnight. For tours, meet at the concierge's desk weekdays at 11 or 1. The hotel is at 2365 Kalakaua Avenue. For details, call the Sheraton Moana Surfrider at (808) 922-3111.
