Shellsuit danger.

THE SHELLSUIT, ultimate fashion statement of the stereotypical Scouser, has been branded a fire hazard.

Education chiefs are warning that shellsuits are a potential risk because they are made of hghly flammable material. It burst on to the scene in the 1980s and proved an immediate hit on Merseyside.

It soon became recognised as the trademark dress of Liverpudlians, mainly through TV comedian Harry Enfield.

But last week education chiefs in Scotland told pupils not to wear the leisure suits in class, especially when they come into contact with bunsen burners.

Yesterday Mike Harris, of Merseyside Fire Brigade, agreed that some shellsuits are a fire hazard. "Because of the material of some shellsuits and because they are so loose fitting it is easier for them to go on fire than ordinary clothing, " he said.

Andy Guy, children's wear buyer at Wade Smith, said: "I think they are popular because parents find them very easy to maintain, especially as their children never have them off their backs.

"I think it will be a sad day for the city if they go out of fashion."
