Shell out for great lobster.

REVIEW NOSH & QUAFF 130, COLMORE ROW, VICTORIA SQ. WWW.NOSHANDQUAFF.CO.UK VERDICT: ????? HHHII NOSH & Quaff is now open in a gorgeous building following a renovation that has cost a hefty seven-figure sum. With it comes the promise of bar food, the star being lobster, under the management of the team behind the wonderful Lasan. That's quite a lot of expectation to live up to.

A spat with a customer on Twitter who questioned why rennet, an animal by-product from the stomach of a young calf, was present in their veggie burger resulted in my eyebrows being raised slightly. The restaurant responded to criticism by saying they'd rather turn away business that use inferior products. Fine, but the presence of rennet makes it not a veggie burger. A small issue for many, but if you were tee-total, you wouldn't want a cocktail with vodka in it listed as a mocktail.

Still, I'm a recovering vegetarian so I'm firmly in the category of someone who doesn't need to worry too much about that. We were swiftly greeted and seated by the serving staff who are among some of the most friendly and helpful I've ever come across. Genuinely, they're as much a credit to the place as the gorgeous decor.

Knives and forks are literally off the table here and our lobster (PS20) and hot dog (PS13) arrived instead with a lobster cracker and pick. First, the hot dog, which is mighty impressive and comes with a home made relish. It is quite simply on another level and, while pricey for a hot dog on first glance, utterly justifies the cost.

Lobster is the main event and picking and cracking your way through is an experience that soothes the soul. On the other hand, those with a bigger appetite probably won't be filled for their cash which is a little disappointing.

Nosh & Quaff is a luxury that you should push yourself to afford now and again. The lobster is something everyone should try if only to see what the fuss has been about. It's messy, fun, probably a perfect place for a first date, but also expensive and the not-a-veggie burger will undoubtedly miff some.
