Shell Global Solutions and NATCO Group Join Forces to Promote Shell Paques Bio-Desulfurization Process in the US.

HOUSTON -- Shell Global Solutions (US) Inc. has appointed the NATCO Group as an authorized licensor for the Shell-Paques Process in the United States of America. The agreement covers part of Shell Global Solutions full range of proven, reliable technologies for treating sour streams and further processing the sour components to obtain valuable products and meet environmental standards.

Developed jointly by Paques B.V. of Balk, the Netherlands and Shell Global Solutions, the Shell-Paques Bio-desulfurization Process removes hydrogen sulfide from natural gas, synthesis gas streams, acid gas, or Claus tail gas. The process involves a treating step with a mild soda solution and a biological oxidation step for conversion of H2S to elemental sulfur utilizing air and thio-bacillus bacteria. Also referred to as the Thiopaq Scrubber Gas Desulfurization Process for bio-gas refinery-gas applications, there are more than 30 applications of this process currently operating worldwide. In addition, Shell is also providing technical, application and service support to NATCO.

"Today's announcement represents a sound, strategic move for the gas processing industry," said Graeme Sweeney President and CEO, Shell Global Solutions (US) Inc. "Through the Shell and NATCO license agreement for the Shell-Paques process, the oil and gas industry will be able to apply a proven, effective, low-cost desulfurization process-removing 200 lb/day to 40 long tons per day of sulfur.

"This agreement brings together technology for desulfurization developed by Shell and Paques with the cost-efficient engineering, design and manufacturing capability of the NATCO organization. Marketing and related services will be provided by both NATCO and Shell."

The Shell-Paques biological gas desulfurization process integrates gas purification with sulfur recovery in one process unit. Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) removal efficiencies in excess of 99.8% can be reliably achieved and treated gas can contain less than 4 ppm H2S. Due to the completely non-fouling of the created bio-sulfur, the process is ideally suited to sensitive locations where flaring, incineration or other combustion options are not desirable.
